Robert Laberge

Jimmie Johnson took a 43 point lead over Carl Edwards in the Sprint Cup Series standings following Saturday night's race at Richmond.

Jimmie Johnson extended his lead in the championship standings to 43 over new second-place driver Carl Edwards following his 12th place at Richmond International Raceway on Saturday night. Johnson's Hendrick Motorsports teammates, Kasey Kahne and Dale Earnhardt Jr. are tied for third -- 46points out of the top spot.

With his victory, Kevin Harvick breaks into the top-10 and sits ninth -- 72 points behind Johnson.

After nine starts, Paul Menard and Aric Almirola have also maintained their fast starts and both hold on to a provisional Chase spot heading into next Sunday's race at Talladega International Speedway.

Denny Hamlin drops to 29th in the standings, 126 points out of 10th place and 71 points out of 20th. Hamlin expects to start next Sunday's race but will give way to a substitute driver at the earliest possible opportunity as he continues to recover from injuries sustained at Auto Club Speedway.
