The Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama is set for Sunday and there's plenty of excitement to be had. Rain forced NASCAR officials to cancel the Saturday qualifying session, which benefited Carl Edwards, who recorded the highest speed in the practice sessions on Friday at 199.675 miles per hour.
Current points leader Jimmie Johnson (343 points) will be in the No. 8 spot on the starting grid. Martin Truex Jr., Marcos Ambrose, Joey Logano, Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin fill the spots in order from Edwards, who is in second place in the standings with 300 even.
Unfortunately, the rain is expected to play a big part in the race. Delays are expected at this point, but the threat of rain does add an interesting dynamic, as noted by SB Nation's Matt Weaver. Last year, the rain played a part in a 20-plus car pileup on the final lap that saw Matt Kenseth escape and coast to a victory.
Knowing how things can change so drastically in bad weather, a more aggressive approach to take and remain in the lead might best serve the drivers on Sunday.
