NASCAR New Hampshire 2014 qualifying results: Kyle Busch wins Loudon pole

Kyle Busch and Jimmie Johnson qualified 1-2 for Sunday’s NASCAR race at New Hampshire.

Jimmie Johnson thought he locked up the pole for Sunday's Camping World RV Sales 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, but then Kyle Busch put down a blistering lap in Friday qualifying.

His speed of 138.130 mph broke the previous track record and gave Busch his second pole of the season. Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart and Jamie McMurray qualified second through fifth.

"I thought I had enough, and then I saw Kyle's lap," Johnson said. "He definitely put one down."

Busch thought he posted a good time but didn't think it was fast enough to unseat Johnson.

"I gave it everything I had," Busch said. "I thought I was a little too tight, but I guess I was driving through it enough that it was still carrying some good speed. I got the throttle down on both ends. The lap felt good -- it didn't feel that good, but I was thinking it was going to be solid."

An eventful afternoon for Joey Logano was capped by a sixth-place qualifying effort. Earlier in practice, Logano crashed when he cut a left rear tire and hit the Turn 1 wall. The damage was heavy, and Team Penske needed to bring out a second No. 22 car for their driver.

Completing the top 12 in the final round were Brad Keselowski, Clint Bowyer, Martin Truex Jr., Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick.

"Overall, for a backup car and making two laps on it before qualifying, I am proud of where we ended up," Logano said. "I just wanted more."

Matt Kenseth, Brian Vickers and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were among those who failed to advance to second and final round of qualifying. Kenseth and Vickers, who each won at New Hampshire a year ago, will start 15th and 17th, respectively, Sunday. Earnhardt qualified 28th.

All 43 cars entered qualified for the Camping World RV Sales 301.
