Marcus Camby was arrested on Monday after a routine traffic stop became a drug bust, and a search of his vehicle yielded marijuana. Per an ABC affiliate in Houston, Texas, Camby had a passenger with him in the car, and they were stopped in a drug free zone near Dawson High School in Pearland, Texas.
Camby, who'll enter his 17th season in the NBA next year, was charged with a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana in a drug free zone. His passenger faces charges as well. Police originally stopped the vehicle because of an equipment violation. As the Pearland Journal reports:
Police officials say officers pulled over Camby’s black Porsche around midnight on when he was spotted driving north on Cullen Boulevard with a sun screen device blocking the front window.
Officers then questioned Camby and a passenger, later identified as Kendal Lance Johnson, 25. Officers say they noticed the smell of marijuana. Camby gave permission for the car to be searched and police said they discovered what appeared to be several marijuana cigarettes and a baggie with a small amount of the same substance hidden under the front seat. Both suspects denied ownership of the marijuana.
After uncovering the drugs and taking the men into custody, each passenger was charged with possession of less than two ounces of marijuana. The bond was set at $2,000 for both men, and if convicted, they could each face up to a year in jail, and up to a $4,000 in fines.

Marcus Camby Has Marijuana Charges Dropped, Record Cleared
Marcus Camby's criminal record has been cleared after marijuana possession charges against him were dropped. The Portland Trail Blazers center had been arrested last month in Texas when about an ounce of marijuana had been found in his car by Brazoria County (Texas) police during a traffic stop. The district attorney decided there was not enough evidence to actually go through with the charges.
The passenger in Camby's car, Kendal Johnson, pleaded guilty to a Class B misdemeanor possession charge and paid a $1,500 fine. The marijuana had been discovered under Johnson's seat after Camby was pulled over in a school zone for an "equipment violation" and police said they smelled burnt marijuana.
Because the incident happened in a school zone, Camby and Johnson could have been charged with a Class A misdemeanor and could have faced up to a year in prison, along with a $4,000 fine.
