Confirmed: Grizzlies' Darrell Arthur Out For Season With Torn ACL

It's official: Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur is injured and out for the season, as an MRI confirmed on Monday that he's got a torn achilles tendon. The Memphis Commercial Appeal confirmed the news on Tuesday morning. Arthur injured himself playing defense against Zach Randolph in practice, and teammates initially thought it was an ankle sprain. Now they find out it's much worse.

As the Commercial Appeal reports:

“It definitely hurts,” forward Zach Randolph said. “He’s come into his own. He’s been working so hard this summer with his game and for him to go down it really hurt. We feel for him. It’s just a tough situation.”

“It’s unfortunate. The timing is really bad. I feel really bad for him as a person. … I feel bad for our team,” [Grizzlies coach Lionel] Hollins said. “They’re very close to Darrell and they were really down (Sunday). But this is the business of basketball and we go on. We have to step up and play and do our jobs. We had to do it last year when Rudy (Gay) got hurt. We just have to go forward.”

The Grizzlies were already thin up front behind Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph, and now it looks like they'll seek out reinforcements in the form of Charlotte Bobcats restricted free agent Dante Cunnigham.

Darrell Arthur Injury Feared Serious, Could Cost Grizzlies A Full Season

Memphis Grizzlies reserve big man Darrell Arthur could miss the entire 2011-12 season with a torn Achilles tendon, reports Ronald Tillery of the Memphis Commercial Appeal. Tillery reports that Arthur went down at Memphis' Sunday practice, and an initial examination indicated a serious injury. Tests continue, and a formal announcement about Arthur's status has not yet been made.

The Grizzlies are painfully thin up front behind stud starters Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol. Arthur averaged 20 minutes per game off of the bench last season, giving coach Lionel Hollins a solid option when Z-Bo and Marc needed rest. The Grizzlies have been lucky in having Randolph and Gasol remain healthy over the past two seasons; losing either at this point for even a short stretch could be devastating, especially with a condensed schedule allowing little rest between games.

There are really no other reliable big men on the roster. The Grizzlies could seek to bring back Leon Powe, who spent the latter part of the 2010-11 season with the club. The team also has a glut of shooting guards (Tony Allen, O.J. Mayo, Xavier Henry, Josh Selby) if Memphis determines that a trade is needed.
