Greg Oden Has Left Knee Surgery, Will Miss Rest Of Season

The Portland Trail Blazers announced Monday that Greg Oden, who hasn't played since 2010, underwent microfracture surgery today on his left knee, ending any chance he'll return for the 2011-2012 season. From the release:

"Initially, Greg was undergoing a procedure similar to the one he had a couple of weeks ago to have debris cleared from his right knee," said Acting General Manager Chad Buchanan. "However, once the doctors were inside Greg's left knee, they unfortunately found articular surface damage and determined microfracture was necessary."

While this might be one of the least surprising news releases in history, it's incredibly sad nonetheless. Oden was signed to a one-year deal this offseason, but this might mean he'll be hard pressed to find a team next year. The Blazers have remained admirably loyal and supportive, but the once-promising center — who, we forget, averaged 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in 24 minutes a game as a 22-year-old — might not get a shot to play again in Rip City.

Greg Oden Injury Update: Portland Trail Blazers' Center To Undergo Arthroscopic Surgery On Right Knee

Greg Oden's injury problems have continued. The Portland Trail Blazers center, who has missed most of the team's games during his four-plus year career, will undergo another procedure on his right knee, the team announced on Friday. Via SB Nation's Blazers blog Blazers Edge:

The Portland Trail Blazers announced on Friday that center Greg Oden will undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee in Vail, CO, today to remove debris. Oden had microfracture surgery on his right knee in September 2007.

Oden's most recent injuries have been on his left knee, but Blazers general manager Chad Buchanan told Blazers Edge that Oden may undergo a similar procedure on that knee as well, though that is "still to be determined." The Blazers had previously announced that Oden had suffered a "setback" that caused them to be "hopeful, but less confident" that Oden will play this season.

Oden has played in just 82 of a possible 351 games in his NBA career after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft.

Greg Oden Reportedly Suffers Setback, Contract Could Shrink

Greg Oden has suffered an injury setback, reports The Oregonian's Jason Quick, and as a result may not play at all in the 2011-12 season. The $8 million qualifying offer he was offered by the Portland Trail Blazers and believed to be prepared to sign could shrink due to the new information, Quick said.

Oden on Thursday was examined by Dr. Steadman in Vail, and said he was given the nod to expand his activity, indicating he had made progress. But the Blazers, who didn't comment Thursday after his appointment, determined that he is less likely to return to the court this season.

Oden has played just 82 games in four seasons since the Blazers made him the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. A series of injuries have felled the big man, who Portland took over Kevin Durant and Al Horford. When he has gotten onto the court, however, Oden has produced well.
