The Memphis Grizzlies are in talks to trade Hasheem Thabeet to the Houston Rockets for Shane Battier, according to reports. Memphis radio host Chris Vernon reported late Wednesday that the Grizzlies look likely to deal Thabeet, the No. 2 pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, before Thursday's NBA trade deadline. Vernon reported that the Grizzlies and Rockets had discussed a deal sending the Tanzanian center to Houston for the veteran Battier, who came into the league with Memphis, but that the Rockets were looking for more.
The Memphis Commercial-Appeal's Ronald Tillery reports that the deal hinges on the Grizzlies agreeing to give the Rockets a first-round pick in the swap. The Grizzlies traded Battier to Houston for the No. 8 pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. That pick was Rudy Gay, Memphis' top wing who happens to be out with separated shoulder, leaving the Grizzlies thin at small forward.
Thabeet has been an unmitigated failure almost two seasons into his career. The Grizzlies passed up James Harden, Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry and Brandon Jennings to take the center out of UConn, but Thabeet has consistently struggled. Last season, he became the highest draft pick ever to be assigned to the NBA D-League.
