The second quarter was a grind for both teams as the Boston Celtics appeared to tire and the Denver Nuggets closed a five-point deficit, heading into the half up one, 37-36. After scoring 23 in the first, Boston skidded to a halt in the second, scoring just 13 points in the quarter. Whether it was the short bench, fatigue or otherwise, Boston just didn’t look itself in the second frame, missing shots and generally looking off-center.
Glen Davis and Kevin Garnett led the way for the Celtics in the first half, scoring eight points apiece. Rajon Rondo added five points, Ray Allen had four and Kevin Garnett had three. Chris Johnson, signed to a 10-day contract ahead of the game, led the way off the bench with four points. Garnett also had a team-high nine rebounds, putting him on the verge of a double-double already.
Nene had a team-high nine points for the Nuggets in the first, with J.R. Smith adding seven and Wilson Chandler adding six off the bench.Arron Afflalo had five points, with Ty Lawson and Kenyon Martin each adding four points. Danilo Gallinari didn’t score a point in the first half, but had four rebounds in his Denver debut.
With the Nuggets adjusting to a new roster and the Celtics playing with a small roster, it’s a battle to see who can survive in the second half. With 24 minutes to go in Denver, the Nuggets lead the Celtics, 37-36
