Derrick Rose was named the NBA MVP on Tuesday in a landslide vote, bringing months of neverending debates about advanced statistics and efficiency and intangibles to a merciful, completely inevitable conclusion. No more debates about efficiency ratings, adjusted plus-minus, PER, WoW, VORP, UZR or anything else. THANK. GOD.
But there's one stat that's more amazing than anything we saw all year... Did you know that every NBA MVP winner in history has made it to the Hall of Fame? That note comes via ESPN's stats twitter, and when you think about it, that's pretty unbelievable.
From Bob Petit to Wes Unseld to Dave Cowens to David Robinson. Everyone the NBA has ever chosen for MVP has made it to the Hall-of-Fame. Compare that to the NFL where guys like Shaun Alexander and Rich Gannon have won just within the past ten years.
So what does this mean for D-Rose?
Well, he's 22 years old.
It may bode well for his future in the eyes of Bulls fans, but it's still way too early to call him a shoo-in Hall-of-Famer, and if anything, it's a little disconcerting. I've been on Team Rose this whole time, mainly because Dwight Howard's numbers make him look better than he is, and there was no way in hell I was going to throw my support behind LeBron James, Inc.
But if voting for Derrick Rose basically amounts to co-signing his ticket to Springfield, we might want to re-think things, no? Maybe just for a second? I know that's not how we're supposed to judge this stuff, but when you think of it that way, it really puts Rose's award in perspective.
Yeah, he deserved it, and barring injury, it'll be the first of many more great seasons. I love D-Rose as much as anyone, so hopefully it all happens. But man... Now that the dust has settled on all the stats debates, even I have to admit. As far as history's concerned, the guy that shot 11-27 and lost to the Hawks on Monday sure has a lot to live up to.
