Dirk Nowitzki 'Break' From Mavericks Will Allow Forward To Work On Conditioning, Strength

Stay connected with SB Nation

Dirk Nowitzki sat out the Dallas Mavericks' game Saturday and will rest for three additional home games. But the way that he and coach Rick Carlisle explain it, Dirk won't be doing any resting at all. Nowitzki said he has been bothered in recent weeks by soreness in his right knee. That has prevented him from running and lifting weights to maintain and improve his in-season conditioning. Now the knee feels better, but his conditioning is shot. During the break from on-court action, Nowitzki will work on getting back into shape.

As quoted by Dwain Price of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Carlisle indicates that it will be a boot camp of sort for Dirk.

"With Dirk out he's going to be busting his [butt] this week," coach Rick Carlisle said. "We're going to be on him hard -- he's got a lot of work to do. If things go like we think they'll go, by the end of the week he'll be back ready to play."
