Flip Saunders was fired in the midst of his third season as the Washington Wizards' head coach.
Washington Wizards head coach Flip Saunders has been fired, sources tell Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Saunders had been the head coach of the franchise since 2009, but struggled to a 2-15 start this season.
The firing comes off the heels of a 20-point loss to the Philadelphia Sixers on Monday, the Wizards' third straight. Washington ranks 27th in the league averaging just 88.65 points per game. Their 99.29 points against per game ranks 26th.
Randy Wittman will replace Saunders in the interim, according to league sources. Wittman has head coaching experience with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1999-2001, and the Minnesota Timerbwolves from 2007-2008. His 100-207 combined record at both stops is not overally encouraging for Washington fans hoping for a positive turnaround to the season, however.
