Gregg Popovich: Rubio Shouldn't Bother Understanding America

Stay connected with SB Nation

Ricky Rubio is the most exciting young player in basketball, and as the world looks to understand him, a recurring question following him: How long will he take to get adjusted to America? It's unclear what the question even means, but so far, nobody's given a better answer to that question then Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.

From the Minnesota Star-Tribune (via LBS):

"These guys, they travel around the world," Popovich said of international players such as Rubio and Ginobili. "They're more cultured than we are. Everyone acts like Americans are the ones ... we have sort of an arrogance about us. Like we're the cultured ones? Are you serious?

''Have you watched TV lately? Have you seen what Americans do? How many languages do you speak? And you wonder how they're going to adjust to our culture? I hope they avoid it and keep their own!"

To paraphrase: "Adjust to America? Why even bother? Open your eyes. You think we have culture in this country? We're doomed. Keep doin' what you're doin, Ricky." Pop is the best, man.
