Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki will not play in Monday night's exhibition game against the Houston Rockets, reports Mavericks play-by-play announcer Mark Followill.
Nowitzki had missed last week's exhibition game against FC Barcelona Regal with swelling in his right knee, later stating that surgery might be needed if the swelling couldn't be brought under control. The forward had the knee drained for the second time in training camp, but participated in practices on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The announcement that Nowitzki would not play also came with the news that the star player would be addressing the media after the game. Nowitzki had taken part in the shootaround prior to the game against the Rockets.
Nowitzki faced similar issues with his knee during the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season, needing to take off four games mid-season to work on conditioning and to ensure his knee was fully healed before he continued playing. He has stated in the past that he does not know what exactly is wrong with the knee but that surgery might be needed if the swelling persists.
