NBA players fighting anti-flopping rules

The National Basketball Players Association's executive director Billy Hunter announced that the players union will file a grievance and an unfair labor practice charge against the NBA, according to Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears. The league announced a new anti-flopping policy on Wednesday.

The Oklahoman's Darnell Mayberry tweeted a statement released by Hunter:

"The NBA is not permitted to unilaterally impose new economic discipline against the players without first bargaining with the union. We believe that any monetary penalty for an act of this type is inappropriate and without precedent in our sport or any other sport."

Hunter's statement continued, saying the NBPA would bring legal attention to what he called a "vague and arbitrary overreaction" by the league and commissioner David Stern.

The NBA said it would charge players for flopping with a penalty ladder of a warning on the first violation, later escalating to a $30,000 fine by the sixth such charge. Following the sixth flop, a player could face suspension or "discipline that is reasonable under the circumstances," according to the NBA announcement.
