NBA trademarks five new team names for New Orleans

Derick E. Hingle-US PRESSWIRE

Ladies and gentlemen, your New Orleans Mosquitoes!

The New Orleans Swamp Dogs?

Maybe. The NBA has trademarked five names for the New Orleans Hornets, according to a report from NBA blog Behind The Buck Pass, as the franchise's identity change continues to develop.

Hornets fans may soon be watching No. 1 draft pick Anthony Davis play for the Pelicans, Mosquitoes, Rougarou, Swamp Dogs, or Bull Sharks.

According to the report, attorney Anil V. George filed trademarks for the names. George has filed name and logo trademarks for NBA entities before.

On Dec. 4, Marc Spears of Yahoo! Sports reported that Pelicans was the name to which the franchise would change, a name that was once borne by a minor-league baseball team in New Orleans. Rougarou is a beast from Louisiana folklore similar to a werewolf, while Swamp Dogs appears to be a local slang term for alligators.

As noted in the report from Spears, Gayle Benson, wife of Hornets owner Tom, has expressed a desire for the team's new colors to be navy blue, red, and gold.
