P.J. Carlesimo has been named the interim head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.
Brooklyn Nets assistant coach P.J. Carlesimo will be named the team's interim head coach after the firing of Avery Johnson, according to a report by Ken Berger of CBSSports.com on Thursday afternoon.
Johnson was relieved of his duties as head coach on Thursday afternoon. With the Nets struggling as of late (3-7 in their last 10 games and currently in the midst of a two-game losing streak), the decision to fire Johnson was not overly shocking but reportedly did catch some individuals in the organization off guard.
This led Berger to believe that the decision came directly from Nets' owner Mikhail Prokhorov.
Carlesimo has previously acted as the head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers (1994-97), Golden State Warriors (1997-2000) and Oklahoma City Thunder (2007-09).
In 500 regular season games, Carlesimo has registered a 204-296 record; in 12 playoff games he is 3-9.
After leading the Trail Blazers to three straight playoff appearances, Carlesimo-led teams have failed to qualify for the postseason.
