The Atlanta Hawks took a narrow win over the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday night, 108-104, outhustling Denver in a close contest. Atlanta stayed in front of Denver for much of the game thanks to picking up rebounds and turnovers, and a late turnover that resulted in a three-point play for the Hawks derailed Denver's late comeback.
Atlanta finished with more rebounds than Denver, 47 to 40, a testament to the comeback mounted by the Nuggets. They led, 101-99, with two minutes left, but their effort took a serious blow with just over thirty seconds left. Ty Lawson dribbled the ball off his own foot, and Josh Smith scooped it up and went straight to the rim. He was fouled on the dunk, and his free throw put Atlanta up by five. Denver tried fouling to stay in the game, but Louis Williams sunk two of two free throws to seal the win for Atlanta.
Al Horford gets the game ball for Atlanta, putting up 25 points on 12-of-20 shooting, with 12 rebounds. Horford's efforts on the inside were a big part of Atlanta keeping control of the ball. Josh Smith added another 16 points and 13 rebounds for the team.
Ty Lawson led the Nuggets in scoring with 32 points, and Corey Brewer came off the bench with 19 points.
The Hawks improve to 10-5 with the win, while Denver falls to 9-10. Atlanta will next face the Washington Wizards, while Denver takes on the Indiana Pacers.
