We're now over 20 years removed from the day Magic Johnson stepped behind a podium and announced that he was HIV-positive. It wasn't a "sports moment." It was, however, a profound moment for all of us. As a nine-year-old it sparked one of the first big-kid thoughts I ever had: he's one of the biggest, strongest, coolest, most awesome guys on the planet. And now we're all going to watch him die.
He's still here, thank God, but that moment was more intellectually and emotionally challenging for more human beings than most other moments in my lifetime. So I have pretty high hopes for ESPN's new documentary, "The Announcement," which premieres March 11th. It concerns both Magic's press conference and the circumstances surrounding it. The trailer is after the jump.
