Kyrie Irving Injury Update: Cavs Guard Will Rejoin Lineup Wednesday Against Pacers

Kyrie Irving is expected to return to the lineup for the Cleveland Cavaliers after sitting out the team's last three games with a concussion. The rookie point guard began experiencing concussion symptoms last week Wednesday, and at the time it was unclear how much time he would be forced to miss. He should be okay to play this Wednesday againt the Indiana Pacers, however.

Irving passed the mandatory tests laid out in the NBA's return-to-play protocol, part of the league's new stance against concussions. He is expected to start against Indiana, and play somewhere in the 30 to 33-minute range.

"It was a process I had to go through and it made me appreciate what I was doing at the beginning of the season and when I was out and not being able to be with my teammates," Irving said. "It was a process I had to go through and I'm glad it's done."

Irving began suffering mild symptoms after apparently taking a knee to the head against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Cavs went 1-2 in the rookie's absence. Irving is averaging 18 points, 5.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 29.8 minutes per game this season.

Kyrie Irving Injury: Cavs Guard Diagnosed With Concussion, Out Indefinitely

Kyrie Irving will miss Wednesday night's matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Clippers, and may be out even longer after being diagnosed with a concussion. Irving began experiencing concussion-like symptoms on Wednesday and a team doctor made the diagnosis before the Cavs' matchup with the Clippers.

The concussion appears to have happened on Tuesday, when Irving took a knee to the head late in the game. That and news of an indefinitely timetable comes from @PDCavsInsider.

Irving has made an immediate impact in his rookie season, averaging 18 points, 5.1 assists and 3.5 rebounds while playing 29.8 minutes per game. With a diagnosed concussion, Irving faces uncertainty, with doctors waiting for symptoms to subside before clearing him for action and contact again. As we've seen before in many other sports, concussions are unpredictable and best handled with caution for the sake of the athlete's future.
