Jeremy Lin Injury Update: Knicks' Guard Won't Play Vs. Heat, Mike Woodson Says

New York Knicks guard Jeremy Lin missed the final portion of the regular season with a knee injury that required surgery, but there was some hope the team would get Lin back for a portion of the 2012 NBA Playoffs. According to Knicks head coach Mike Woodson, even if the series went to seven games, Lin will not be available at all against the Miami Heat.

The Knicks went on a bit of a run with Jeremy Lin at point guard, sparking the whole "Linsanity" craze but the team has also been able to win games without him in the lineup. The team avoided elimination from the playoffs by beating the Heat on Sunday, but there won't be any miraculous return to the lineup for Lin in the 2012 Playoffs.

Jeremy Lin Injury: Knicks Guard Not In Great Shape, Likely Out Game 5

The New York Knicks lost Baron Davis to an unfortunate injury on Sunday afternoon and, as TV production people are wont to do, the camera immediately panned to Jeremy Lin following a commercial break. Lin was in a suit due to a knee injury of his own, but the consensus was that Linsanity may reign again if he were able to suit up for a do-or-die Game 5.

Unfortunately that won't be the case, as Lin is apparently not quite healthy enough to return from his torn meniscus. NBA.com's John Schuhmann has the relevant quotes from Knicks head coach Mike Woodson.

It's really unfortunate for the Knicks, considering they're now without three point guards -- Iman Shumpert tore his ACL earlier in the series -- and need to go on a winning streak in order to advance to the next round. In the meantime, Mike Bibby will be counted on quite a bit.

Jeremy Lin Worries Knicks Fans

The New York Knicks were blessed with the emergence of Jeremy Lin out of nowhere earlier this year but, like everything else, good things must come to an end. It's an unfortunate end for Lin and the Knicks this season, however, as the star point guard is likely out for the remainder of the season.

Lin tore his meniscus in March, news that most people likely are aware of by now. There's not a lot more to say about the injury, but Posting and Toasting's Seth Rosenthal summed it up from the perspective of Knicks fans.

Man, I hate injuries so much. As you've probably heard, Jeremy Lin's injury turned out to be a torn meniscus in his left knee. After a few days to deliberate -- hence the media silence, I suppose -- Lin and the Knicks determined surgery to be the best course of action.

First off, best of luck to Lin in recovery. This sucks a lot, and it leaves the Knicks with some problems to solve in the backcourt. Mike Woodson and Glen Grunwald have Baron Davis (who is injured), Mike Bibby, Toney Douglas, and sometimes Iman Shumpert available, and perhaps some possibility of making a small move.

We'll see.

With Davis playing hurt and Lin injured, there really aren't a lot of options in the backcourt for Knicks fans. The rookie Shumpert has shown flashes of both good and bad this season, too -- with the bad likely being the more worrying part when it comes to the hopes of fans in New York.

Jeremy Lin Injury Timetable Could Change Following Surgery

Jeremy Lin is scheduled to have surgery on his knee this week to repair a torn meniscus, an injury that was originally projected by the team to take him off the active roster for about six weeks. That timetable could be shortened, however, once the doctors begin surgery and find out the extent of the tear.

Lin was originally projected to have to sit out at least the remainder of the regular season, but the New York Post's Marc Berman found a doctor that says Lin might be able to return in as soon as two weeks if everything goes well during surgery.

Dr. Wellington Hsu, an orthopedic surgeon/assistant professor at Northwestern, said professional athletes could return from torn meniscus surgery in two-to-four weeks. However, because Lin's is a "chronic" tear, by definition some arthritis exists in Lin's knee, according to Dr. Hsu, who has not treated the Knicks point guard.

"If they don't see anything else wrong in surgery, just see the tear, typically you can get back in the NFL in two to four weeks and I've seen NBA players get back within that period," Hsu told The Post. "That's assuming there are no surprises."

There's no telling how optimistic Dr. Hsu is being, but it'd definitely benefit the Knicks if Lin is able to return sooner than anticipated as New York tries to hold off the Milwaukee Bucks for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Jeremy Lin Will Be Free Agent In July, With Knicks Hoping To Retain

Has Jeremy Lin, who will miss the remainder of the season with a torn meniscus, played his last game with the New York Knicks? Lin will be a free agent at season's end and, in theory, could land somewhere else.

But thanks to the Gilbert Arenas rule, Lin is likely to remain in the Big Apple.

Under current NBA rules, restricted free agents with two or fewer years in the league cannot be offered more than the league's average salary (upwards of $5 million per season), which allows incumbent teams to match offer sheets even if they are over the salary cap. The rule was introduced in 2005. In 2003, Gilbert Arenas, a restricted free agent after two seasons with the Golden State Warriors, signed a $60 million deal with the Washington Wizards. The Warriors couldn't match under league rules.

The Knicks could sign Lin to a multi-year deal starting at the average salary with an early termination option a couple of years in, which would allow Lin to recapture market value fairly soon. There's no doubt other teams will line up to offer Lin the maximum salary he's eligible for if the Knicks don't handle it quickly.

Jeremy Lin Out For Season With Torn Meniscus

The New York Knicks confirmed late Saturday that Jeremy Lin will have surgery on his torn meniscus this week, putting him out of service for six weeks. The regular season has less than four weeks left, and the likelihood of New York making the playoffs and peeling enough games off of the Bulls or Heat to be playing six weeks from now is low. That effectively ends Lin's season.

Lin had a meteoric rise in off-court fame and on-court notoriety this season. In his second year after going undrafted in 2010, the former Harvard point guard was on the verge of being cut by the Knicks when injuries forced coach Mike D'Antoni to begin playing him more. Lin embraced the opportunity and blew opponents out of the water, having huge games against the likes of the L.A. Lakers and Dallas Mavericks. He ended up with 11 20-point games this season, and seven games with 10 or more assists. All seven of those ended up as double-doubles.

Off the court, Lin's Asian-American heritage and against-all-odds success drew huge attention. That his breakout happened in New York, on the league's grandest stage at Madison Square Garden, certainly fueled the media fire.

Lin will be a free agent as of July 1. It is expected that the Knicks will work to retain him quickly.
