'Stan Van Gundy Is Still Our Coach,' Otis Smith Says On Thursday

Orlando Magic general manager Otis Smith did his best to put out the public battle raging between Stan Van Gundy and Dwight Howard ... actually, no -- Smith really did nothing. Asked for comment on Thursday during the Magic's matchup with the New York Knicks, Smith gave a stock statement that can't even be classified as a vote of confidence. He just explained that these are usually in-house matters and that he's talked to both Howard and Van Gundy.

Here's the statement, courtesy of Ben Golliver at CBS Sports.

"Coaches and players have been doing this for years, you just happened to see this play out in the public," Smith said. "To the organization's credit, Stan Van Gundy is still our coach and Dwight Howard is still our player and we're still trying to win basketball games."

Smith was in a situation he probably couldn't win, but his statement really didn't say much of anything. We can tack on "for now" to the part about Van Gundy and it'd probably still be correct, but that's about the only thing to read into the statement.

As Smith was talking about the situation that erupted on Thursday afternoon, the Magic were being hammered by the Knicks. Howard was largely ineffective throughout the game, finishing with eight points and eight rebounds.
