Vinny Del Negro led the Los Angeles Clippers to a rare postseason appearance in the lockout-shortened 2011-12 NBA season. He has been rewarded for his success, as the team will retain his services for one more year.
The Los Angeles Clippers had a breakout year in 2011-12 with a new-look team that included new additions Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups and Caron Butler. The team was eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs in the second round of the playoffs, but by any measure, the season was a rousing success.
One of the constant talking points throughout the season was the seeming fallibility of head coach Vinny Del Negro. There were rumors that he clashed with Paul and that his dismissal may be a vital part of attempts to keep this tem together for next season.
Regardless of whether there is any truth to that sentiment, Eric Pincus reports that the Clippers will keep Del Negro on as head coach for at least one more season.
The backlash is sure to be instant and severe, as many Clippers fans did not care for Del Negro's coaching style, despite the winning season and playoff run. If Paul chooses not to sign a long-term contract with the Clippers, many will point to the retaining of Del Negro as the deciding factor.
