Charlie Villanueva was cut from the Dominican Republic national team as it prepares for Olympic qualifying.

The Dominican Republic national basketball team is attempting to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, but they will have to do so without Charlie Villanueva. The Pistons' forward was cut from the national team Wednesday as they prepare for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Kentucky coach John Calipari, who coaches the Dominican Republic national team, said Villanueva was cut because he was out of shape.

"Charlie was not in good shape when we saw him," said Calipari. "He was overweight, and unfortunately, we could not slow down the entire team and it was a decision taken collectively."

Villanueva played in 13 games for the Pistons this year while battling an ankle injury. He averaged career lows in both scoring and rebounding, finishing with 7.0 points per game and 3.7 rebounds per game. Villanueva played for the Dominican Republic national team during the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship.
