NEWARK -- John Calipari isn't as much of a diabolical genius as you think he is. Well, at least that's what he wants you to believe.
A couple days ago, Calipari sent out a tweet "apologizing" to recruits for not getting back to them because he was fielding so many phone calls from NBA teams about his six likely draft picks. It looked like taunting, and most people took it as taunting. Calipari didn't think so, though.
"It was a 15-second thought," he told reporters. "It was not a two-day fluctuation. I said [to our social media guy], 'Just put that out there that we're sorry. Then, it came out, and you guys think you know my mind. It's amazing. 'I'm diabolical.' Anything I do, there's some reason. I have no idea why."
Calipari explained that he was actually getting a lot of recruiting calls to which he couldn't respond, so he asked his social media guru to send out the tweet. But he couldn't help but get one dig in there at his competition. When asked about South Carolina coach Frank Martin's response, he had this to say.
"They told me that," Calipari said. "I was going to say that to Frank that I heard he was calling those players because they weren't calling me."
So it's settled. John Calipari, diabolical genius.
