Donte Greene's hopes of backing up Gerald Wallace for the Brooklyn Nets this year are on hold after he fractured his ankle in a workout before joining the team.
The 6'11 swingman had worked out a deal to come to Nets' training camp after signing a non-guaranteed contract. However, those plans have a hitch in them after Greene broke his ankle while working out Saturday. Greene now needs surgery, which makes his chances of joining the Nets on time somewhat slim.
"I expect him to be a Net," said Luchey, who indicated Greene, 24, a four-season veteran with Sacramento, was headed for an MRI last night. "I just don’t know when. We don’t know how long the rehab will be after his surgery."
The fourth-year player out of Syracuse could still end up in Brooklyn, but the non-guaranteed nature of the contract means they can opt for a healthy player to fill Greene's role rather than waiting for him to heal. Brooklyn has 13 players under guaranteed contracts, meaning it has two roster spots to fill.
