It's been almost a month since the signing was initially reported, but on Monday, the Cleveland Cavaliers finally confirmed that they have re-signed guard/forward Alonzo Gee to a contract, via the official website. General Manager Chris Grant announced the signing from Cleveland Clinic Courts and had a good bit to say about bringing Gee back:
"From the start of free agency, we made it clear that re-signing Alonzo was important to us and we're happy we've been able to do that," Grant said. "Alonzo has worked very hard to make the most of the opportunities he has had thus far and it has been great to see his development and growth as a Cavalier. We're excited he will be part of our team as our young group of players continues to grow together."
The signing was widely reported on Aug. 18, just eight days short of a month ago. Conrad Kaczmarek of Fear The Sword speculates that the framework has been in place since that point, but that there were snags in the deal that weren't resolved until recently. Sam Amico also Tweeted that there was never any large issues during contract negotiations and that a deal was always going to happen.
At any rate, Gee projects to be the starting small forward right out of the gate. He's an important re-signing for a Cavaliers team that might face some issues down the line retaining talent if a sizable portion of their young players start coming into their own all at once. Gee posted 10.6 points per game, 5.1 rebounds per game and had 29.0 minutes per game in 2011, all of which were career bests.
