Shane Battier injury: Heat forward to sit with sore hamstring

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Heat will be without forward Shane Battier Thursday night against the Portland Trail Blazers because of a sore hamstring.

Shane Battier will not play Thursday night for the Miami Heat when they take on the Portland Trail Blazers because of a sore hamstring. Team trainers decided to hold Battier out due to soreness with the hope that it doesn't develop into a more serious injury. Battier will be considered day-to-day going forward.

Battier went scoreless in 17 minutes of playing time in Tuesday's loss to the Indiana Pacers. It was the second straight game that he failed to score a point. On the season, Battier is averaging 6.1 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in about 25 minutes of action a night. Battier's absence could mean more minutes for Mike Miller or James Jones tonight against the Blazers.

Battier's value to the team at this point is more defender and team leader that scorer. He has played in 30 games for Miami this season while making 15 starts. Despite the loss to the Pacers, the Heat lead the Eastern Conference with a 23-10 record.
