25 points in each of the first three quarters put Memphis ahead, 75-59, heading into the fourth before the Celtics stormed back. Boston went on a 17-4 run to cut the deficit to five with just under five minutes remaining, but would not draw any closer. Tony Allen then made a pair of free throws to extend the lead for the Grizzlies, who kept adding to their advantage at the line for the remainder of the game.
Rudy Gay had 19 points, six rebounds and five assists in another solid performance at small forward, while Darrell Arthur and Marreese Speights came off the bench to give the Grizzlies 10 points each.
Paul Pierce led Boston with 17 points and seven rebounds. He was also 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Rajon Rondo notched his customary double-double with 11 points and 10 assists. Every player who appeared for the Celtics scored.
The Grizzlies outrebounded the Celtics, 39-27, though neither team had a player pick up more than eight boards.
With the loss, Boston has now lost four straight and will try to get back on track Friday at home against the Pacers. The Grizzlies, who seem to have righted the ship after dropping three out of four, also have a home game on Friday. They will host the Portland Trail Blazers.
