Shawn Marion fined $25,000 for criticizing NBA referees

Dallas Mavericks forward Shawn Marion was fined for his comments about the officials in a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Shawn Marion was fined $25,000 for his comments directed at officials after his Dallas Mavericks fell 117-114 to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday.

According to Sports Illustrated, Marion told reporters that it's hard to win any game playing "five on eight," referring to the three referees. He said some of the calls were fouls while others were "questionable."

The loss dropped the Mavericks to 17-24 on the year, and it came despite a strong effort. The Thunder needed 52 points from forward Kevin Durant to pull out the victory, and that included the All-Star going to the free throw line 21 times and making all of those attempts.

Overall, Dallas shot 30 free throws to Oklahoma City's 36. Marion scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds in the Mavericks' loss. NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson announced the fine.

The 14-year professional is averaging 10.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this season.
