Rajon Rondo injury: Celtics guard out for year with torn ACL

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Celtics received a heavy blow when an MRI revealed that Rajon Rondo will miss the rest of the year with a torn ACL.

Rajon Rondo has been ruled out for the season with an ACL injury, ESPN's Doris Burke reported during the Boston Celtics' game on Sunday against the Miami Heat. The team's Twitter feed also reported the news and added that a surgery date was to be decided.

Rondo was admitted to the New England Baptist Hospital after struggling to move during pregame warmups for the Sunday afternoon game. Earlier reports indicated that Rondo had hyperextended his knee during Boston's overtime loss against Atlanta on Friday, but the news quickly worsened on Sunday soon after the point guard was quickly struck from the starting lineups.

Rondo played 45 minutes in the game against the Hawks.

The Celtics' point guard averaged 13.7 points, 11.1 assists and 5.6 rebounds per game. The onus will now lie on Avery Bradley and Courtney Lee, the latter of whom replaced Rondo in the starting lineup against Miami on Sunday. Backup guards Jason Terry and Leandro Barbosa will likely see their playing time extended after the news.
