Scott Skiles unlikely to return as Bucks coach next year, according to report

Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

The Milwaukee Bucks were told by head coach Scott Skiles that he will not seek a contract extension with the team.

Head coach Scott Skiles told the Milwaukee Bucks that he will not seek a contract extension when his five-year deal ends after this season, according to NBA.com's David Aldridge.

Multiple league sources say that Skiles, who is in the final year of the five-year contract he signed in 2008, has informed the Bucks that he does not want a contract extension, and is resigned to the fact that he will be elsewhere next season.

That doesn't necessarily mean the Bucks don't want Skiles. The team has reportedly told Skiles to "keep an open mind" in the case he changes his mind following this season. At the same time, Milwaukee has not offered nor seriously discussed any contract extension with Skiles, Aldridge reports.

Aldridge also writes that Skiles and the team aren't at odds relationship-wise. The coach and owner Herb Kohl are apparently on good terms.

The Bucks got off to a strong start this season, starting 16-12 before losing four straight heading into a game on Tuesday against Phoenix.

The team could have a very different feel next season regardless of Skiles' ultimate decision, as General Manager John Hammond is also in the final year of his contract. Starting guard Brandon Jennings will be a restricted free agent, and backcourt mate Monta Ellis has an opt-out clause in his contract following this season.
