Andrew Bynum injury: Cavaliers big man participates in 'some' 5-on-5

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The big man is still awaiting clearance to participate in a full practice.

Cleveland Cavaliers center Andrew Bynum took another big step in his rehab on Sunday, participating in 'some' five-on-five in practice, according to Mary Schmitt Boyer of The Plain Dealer.

Bynum hasn't been completely ruled out for the Cavs' season opener against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday, although it seems unlikely that he'll play. Cavs head coach Mike Brown said Bynum is still being kept out of some parts of practice and hasn't received medical clearance to play in a game.

Brown went on to say that once Bynum gets that medical clearance from the doctors, a decision will be made on whether he should play right away. The Cavs have been very cautious in their handling of Bynum, who hasn't played since the 2011-12 season due to a plethora of knee problems.

Considering the precaution that has been taken already, Bynum likely won't return to the court until he and the doctors are absolutely sure he's 100 percent healthy. There's no reason for him to push things in order to be ready for the start of the year. What matters is that he's good to go as the season goes on.
