Nene injury: Wizards center suffers calf injury in opener

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

Starting center Nene could miss playing time with a calf injury suffered in the Washington Wizards' season-opening loss to the Detroit Pistons.

The Washington Wizards' Nene could potentially miss playing time after suffering a left calf injury in Wednesday's season-opening loss to the Detroit PistonsCSN Washington's J. Michael reports.

The big man started at center for Washington and finished with 12 points and three rebounds, but he could be seen limping after the game. Nene injured himself coming down on his third jumper of the game, Michael reports, yet the center continued to play and logged 30 minutes in total. Nene could potentially be held out of Thursday's practice if the Wizards give it a go with a game looming on Friday.

The news isn't good for coach Randy Wittman's squad, which has dealt with various injuries to their starting big man before. Last season, Nene missed time with a foot injury and over the last several seasons has dealt with multiple knee issues.

Bullets Forever: More on the Wizards

If Nene isn't able to play, the Wizards will turn to center Marcin Gortat, who was acquired just before the season in a trade with the Phoenix Suns. Ideally, Washington would like Gortat and Nene to start together in a big frontcourt, but now Gortat might find the starting role by default. Gortat scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds off the bench in the 113-102 loss to Detroit.
