J.R. Smith will make his season debut with the New York Knicks Sunday when they play the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday, reports Ian Begley of ESPN. The 2013 Sixth Man of the Year will return to his role off the bench.
Smith was suspended five games for violating the NBA's suspense abuse policy after signing a three-year, $17 million contract with the Knicks then undergoing a knee procedure.
Smith averaged 18.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season and was a key contributor for a Knicks team that finished with the best franchise record in over a decade. New York has opened the season with a 2-3 and held a "players-only" meeting after losing three straight games after their season-opening win.
His return to the lineup will be a welcome addition for coach Mike Woodson who faces the challenge of playing without center Tyson Chandler for at least four weeks after he suffered a non-displaced fracture to his right fibula.
