Brandon Jennings to debut as Pistons host Celtics

Tim Fuller-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Pistons will bring Brandon Jennings off the bench in his season debut, which was held back because of the point guard's recovery from an impacted wisdom tooth.

After missing the first two games while recovering from an impacted wisdom tooth, Detroit Pistons point guard Brandon Jennings will play Sunday against the Boston Celticsreports Pistons.com's Keith Langlois. Jennings, however, will come off the bench.

The move isn't surprising to Matt Watson of Detroit Bad Boys, who believes Jennings will need time to find himself on the court after losing six pounds over the last few weeks -- Jennings couldn't eat solid foods during his recovery. The point guard, who was acquired via a sign-and-trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, will wear a mask to protect his jaw bone, which was fractured by the impacted wisdom tooth.

Against the Celtics, Chauncey Billups and Will Bynum will start for the third straight game alongside a frontcourt of Josh SmithGreg Monroe and Andre Drummond.

Detroit Bad Boys: More on the Pistons

How Jennings fits into the Pistons backcourt is still up in the air. Coach Maurice Cheeks has started Bynum and Billups in Detroit's first two games, but he also has Rodney Stuckey and rookie Kentavious Caldwell-Pope coming off the bench. Detroit is 1-1 on the year and Bynum seems like the potential starter who could eventually be replaced by Jennings in the lineup. Cheeks likes Bynum running with the Pistons' bench unit.

With Stuckey putting in 19 points in his season debut Friday, it's also a wonder if he could push Billups to start at shooting guard.
