Josh Smith trade: Hawks turn down Bucks offer at last minute, according to report

The Bucks and Hawks were reportedly on the verge of a last-minute deal for Josh Smith, but GM Danny Ferry backed out in the final minutes before the deadline.

The Atlanta Hawks pulled out of a final-hour trade that would have sent Josh Smith to the Bucks in exchange for three role players and a protected No. 1 pick, reports Ric Bucher. The Bucks and Hawks were said to be in "serious" talks as the 3 p.m. ET deadline approached. But shortly after the deadline hit, news quickly surfaced that the Hawks had cut off trade talks and were holding onto Smith.

Bucher's report outlines a deal with the Bucks that would have sent Ekpe Udoh, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, Beno Udrih, and a protected No. 1 pick to Atlanta. Earlier on Thursday, Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowksi reported that Udoh and guard Monta Ellis were two names that had come up in the trade discussions between both teams.

In the end, however, that package of role players and a pick was not enough for Danny Ferry to move Smith and his expiring contract. Milwaukee quickly moved on from the last-minute breakdown with Atlanta to sort out a trade with the Orlando Magic for shooting guard J.J. Redick.

Smith had been rumored to be on the move for the past few weeks, with several teams as potential landing spots. Much of the trade speculation on Thursday, however, centered around the deal with Milwaukee. But Ferry and the Hawks, who are currently the sixth seed in the East, opted to move on with Smith still in the fold.
