Marc Gasol beats out LeBron James, Serge Ibaka for Defensive Player of the Year

Grizzlies big man Marc Gasol edged out Miami's LeBron James and OKC's Serge Ibaka for 2013 NBA Defensive Player of the Year honors.

Memphis Grizzlies big man Marc Gasol officially received the 2013 NBA Defensive Player of the Year award Wednesday, the league announced. He's the first player in franchise history to receive the award.

Gasol, the anchor behind the Grizzlies' elite defense, received 212 of the possible 1,089 total points. He also received 30 first-place votes from the 121 sportswriters and broadcasters who cast ballots, besting second-place finisher LeBron James, who received 18 first-place votes and 149 total points.

Rounding out the top five were Oklahoma City's Serge Ibaka with 122 points, Chicago's Joakim Noah with 107 points and Gasol's teammate, Tony Allen, with 102 points.

3. Serge Ibaka, Thunder: 14 first-place votes, 122 points

5. Tony Allen, Grizzlies: nine first-place votes, 102 points
6. Tim Duncan, Spurs: 11 first-place votes, 94 points
7. Larry Sanders, Bucks: four first-place votes, 90 points
8. Paul George, Pacers: eight first-place votes, 57 points
9. Andre Iguodala, Nuggets: five first-place votes, 43 points
10. Roy Hibbert, Pacers: three first-place votes, 36 points
11. Chris Paul, Clippers: two first-place votes, 19 points
12. Avery Bradley, Celtics: two first-place votes, 15 points
13. Tyson Chandler, Knicks: 11 points
14. Dwight Howard, Lakers: one first-place vote, six points
14. Luol Deng, Bulls: one first-place vote, six points

Also receiving votes were Miami's Dwyane Wade, Washington's Trevor Ariza, Chicago's Jimmy Butler, Denver's Kenneth Faried, Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook and a third Memphis player, Mike Conley.
