David Kahn won't return to Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves will not pick up a team option on president of basketball operations David Kahn and are expected to replace him with former coach Flip Saunders, The Associated Press reports. Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski also reported that the team has already fired Kahn. The team later confirmed that Kahn is out.

NBA.com's Steve Aschburner reported six days ago that Minnesota was likely to move in this direction. Kahn leaves the team after four seasons and an 89-223 record.

Under Kahn's leadership, the Timberwolves fired coach Kurt Rambis and hired current coach Rick Adelman, But Kahn's reign has mostly come under heavy scrutiny. He drafted point guard Jonny Flynn -- who is now out of the NBA -- a pick behind Rubio at No. 6, chose Wesley Johnson No. 4 overall and had signees such as Michael Beasley and Darko Milicic sputter out. As a team, the Timberwolves have missed the playoffs five straight seasons.

On the positive end Kahn was responsible for the drafting of point guard Ricky Rubio and the signing of Nikola Pekovic, who was originally drafted under previous front office executive Kevin McHale. Kahn also had decent signings such as Andrei Kirilenko and the still-to-be-judged No. 2 overall draft selection of Derrick Williams.

The T-Wolves and owner Glen Taylor have been in talks with Saunders the last few weeks, according to Aschburner. Including options, his contract is expected to go through the 2017-18 season and could be worth upwards of $9 million in total
