Detroit Pistons interested in San Antonio Spurs assistant coach, according to report

US PRESSWIRE

The Pistons have targeted Mike Budenholzer as a candidate for their head coaching vacancy, top assistant coach with the Spurs.

The Detroit Piston's head coaching search continues, as they have targeted the San Antonio Spurs top assistant coach Mike Budenholzer, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

The Pistons announced on Friday that Phil Jackson would advise the organization in their coaching search. Detroit has been active in making steps move the franchise in a different direction, as Pistons president Joe Dumars already met with Budenholzern on Wednesday, reports Wojnarowski.

Budenholzer has been an assistant with Gregg Popovich for the past 16 season. During that span the Spurs have won four championships. The Spurs finished as the second seed in the Western Conference this season at 58-24 and have since swept the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round. They will face the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference semifinals.

Wojarowski also indicates that Budenholzer has grown more open to hearing coaching offers after being contacted by the Warriors and Phoenix Suns in the past. Dunholzer is also likely candidate to take over as Spurs coach when Popovich retires from coaching.
