Doc Rivers and Los Angeles Clippers interested in one another, according to report

Mark L. Baer-USA TODAY Sports

Though Doc Rivers' status with the Boston Celtics is undetermined, there are whispers that he could look into coaching the Los Angeles Clippers should he leave Beantown.

Doc Rivers would be interested in joining the Los Angeles Clippers if he and the Boston Celtics decide to go in opposite directions, sources told ESPN. The Clippers haven't requested to speak with the Celtics head coach, the sources said, but if Rivers does decide to leave Boston he would immediately become the top candidate in LA.

Much of the rumor will depend on the Celtics' future. Boston general manager Danny Ainge and Rivers have continued to dig deep in determining whether the team should blow up its core that includes aging stars Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett.

If the Celtics go into a full rebuild, it's quite possible Rivers steps aside, CBS Sports' Ken Berger reported on Wednesday.

Los Angeles has been slow in its coaching search, but it remains one of the most marketable jobs in the NBA. Indiana Pacers assistant coach Brian Shaw and soon-to-be-free-agent Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins are among the coaches named as candidates in the Clippers' search. Former Denver Nuggets coach George Karl and former Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan also have been mentioned as drawing interest in Los Angeles.
