Doc Rivers trade: Coach would have stayed with Celtics without deal, according to report

Debby Wong-USA TODAY Sports

If the Celtics couldn't reach a deal with the Clippers, Rivers was prepared to coach Boston during the 2013-2014 season.

The Boston Celtics have agreed to terms to release coach Doc Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers, but if a deal had not been made, Rivers had informed the Celtics he would return for the 2013-2014 season, reports Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

The parties now await league approval on the deal. The Clippers will trade their unprotected 2015 first-round draft pick in exchange for Rivers and have agreed to terms on a three-year, $21 million contract with the coach.

Rivers had indicated he no longer had interest in joining the Clippers and the deal was reportedly dead on Friday. Danny Ainge and Rivers were expected to hold a press conference on Monday to discuss their future. Rivers was deciding between returning to Boston or pursuing a career in television.

Rivers compiled a 416-305 coaching record with the Celtics since becoming Boston's coach at the start of the 2004-2005 season.
