Doc Rivers officially announced as coach and Senior VP of Basketball Operations for Clippers

David Richard-US PRESSWIRE

The Los Angeles Clippers will give a wealth of power to newly-signed coach Doc Rivers.

Doc Rivers was officially named as the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday but he'll also be serving as the senior vice president of basketball operations. That title gives the former Boston Celtics coach a strong grip on player personnel decisions under owner Donald Sterling.

After Rivers inked the deal, the Celtics announced a receipt for a first-round pick being sent from Los Angeles as compensation for Rivers being allowed out of his contract with Boston. More interestingly, Rivers' compensation agreement states that the Celtics and Clippers cannot engage in trades until after this upcoming season, according to CBS Sports' Ken Berger.

That presumably means there won't be a way for the two teams to restart talks about a trade involving Kevin Garnett.

Rivers is expected to hold a press conference on Wednesday, and Celtics general manager Danny Ainge will speak with Boston media Tuesday evening.

Now, Rivers will need to hire an assistant coaching staff. NBA.com's David Aldridge reports Rivers will speak with former Suns coach Alvin Gentry, but Gentry could also join his former boss, Mike D'Antoni, and the Lakers.

Boston defensive guru Mike Longabardi officially accepted a position with the Suns on Tuesday and won't be available. Fellow Boston assistant Jay Larranaga could be in the running for the Celtics' opening, according to Yahoo! Sports, but Rivers might bring Boston assistants Tyronn Lue and Kevin Eastman to Los Angeles.
