NBA Draft 2013 results: New Orleans Pelicans select Nerlens Noel with No. 6 pick

USA TODAY Sports

Noel took a serious slide on draft night, before eventually being taken with the sixth pick. The New Orleans Pelicans immediately traded him and a 2014 first-rounder to the Philadelphia 76ers for Jrue Holiday.

After an unexpected slide, Kentucky center Nerlens Noel was finally selected by the New Orleans Pelicans with the No. 6 pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. He was immediately traded, along with a 2014 first-rounder, to the Philadelphia 76ers for point guard Jrue Holiday and the 42nd pick in this year's draft, according to Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Noel had been on the top of most mock drafts prior to the draft, but the Cleveland Cavaliers took Anthony Bennett instead. Noel then dropped several more spots before being scooped up by the Pelicans.

Noel came into the draft virtually assured of being a top-5 selection despite suffering a season-ending ACL tear in February. In his only season with the Wildcats, Noel proved to be a defensive stopper, averaging 4.4 blocks per game and altering countless more shots. He also pulled in 9.5 rebounds and scored 10.5 points per contest.

Noel's offensive game isn't quite developed yet, but has already shown promise. The bulk of his points might come from offensive rebounds, but he also has a baby hook shot in the works. If he can improve his offense, Noel could turn into an excellent player at the next level.
