76ers to interview David Vanterpool for head coaching job, per report

USA TODAY Sports

David Vanterpool could be the man to take over in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia 76ers will interview David Vanterpool for their vacant head coaching job, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. The Sixers have been looking for a new head coach since Doug Collins resigned on April 18.

Vanterpool spent last season as an assistant coach with the Portland Trail Blazers. That came after a stint as a coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder and an assistant coach with CSKA Moscow, where he also finished a 12-year playing career.

While in Portland, Vanterpool was charged with bringing along first-round pick Damian Lillard. The point guard would go on to win NBA Rookie of the Year, and in the process helped raise the profile of Vanterpool.

A former point guard himself with a Italian Supercup and Euroleague championship to his name, Vanterpool could be seen by the 76ers as the ideal coach for Michael Carter-Williams, the team's first-round pick. Vanterpool is short on coaching experience, but Philadelphia isn't expected to contend in 2013-14, so enduring some growing pains with the new coach isn't a major drawback for the 76ers if they believe he can be a great coach down the road.
