Boston Celtics rookie big man Kelly Olynyk has plantar fasciitis, and he likely will not play for Team Canada in the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship, according to Toronto Raptors radio analyst Eric Smith. The tournament is set to tip off Aug. 30 and is qualifying for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.
The injury is a bit of a setback for Olynyk, who was impressive for Boston's Summer League team in Orlando. SB Nation's Mike Prada listed Olynyk as the second-best player in all of Summer League behind only Cody Zeller. Olynyk, the No. 13 pick in the draft, averaged 18.0 points and 7.8 rebounds while shooting 57.8 percent from the field in five games.
Despite the injury, Olynyk is expected to be at training camp with Team Canada this week. So is Anthony Bennett, who also likely won't be playing in the FIBA Americas as he continues to recover from shoulder surgery.
Two other notable names who will not play for Team Canada are high school phenom Andrew Wiggins, preparing for his freshman season at Kansas, and Los Angeles Lakers center Robert Sacre.
