Brett Brown frontrunner for 76ers head coaching job, per report

The San Antonio Spurs assistant is in the lead to land the Philadelphia 76ers head-coaching position.

San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Brett Brown is leading in the Philadelphia 76ers' search for a new head coach, The Philadelphia Inquirer's Keith Pompey reports.

The summer-long process to replace former coach Doug Collins has included a long list of rumored names, including Collins' assistant Michael Curry.

The 76ers most recently were rumored in a report with Portland Trail Blazers assistant Dave Vanderpool. If Brown does not take the job, Pompey reports that Vanderpool, Curry and Boston Celtics assistant Jay Larranaga will round out a shortlist of favorites. Chicago Bulls assistant Adrian Griffin is another candidate who interviewed with Philadelphia.

If Brown does take the job, he will be the second Spurs assistant to take a head coaching job this offseason. Gregg Popovich lost lead assistant Mike Budenholzer to the Atlanta Hawks earlier this summer.

Brown was reportedly about to be hired on June 27, the night of the NBA Draft, but new general manager Sam Hinkie quickly squashed the rumor.

The decision could still take a while because 76ers owner Josh Harris has not interviewed any of the candidates but will speak with the finalists before a hire is made, according to Pompey.
