The second round of play at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship tournament begins Monday with a full schedule as 12 teams continue to compete for qualification to the 2014 World Cup and a shot at the 2016 Olympics. The round-robin first round ended Saturday with three teams -- Saudi Arabia, Malaysia and Thailand -- all eliminated from the competition.
Their elimination leaves six games to be played Monday as the second round of round-robin games are played. Each team will play three of five possible opponents in the pool with the top eight teams advancing to the final round beginning on Aug. 9.
Coming off a tough loss to Iran, China tips off against unbeaten Kazakhstan in one of the big games Saturday as its a matchup that will hopefully include 2011 FIBA Asia MVP Yi Jianlian after a two-game absence. The former NBA player recorded 23 points and 10 rebounds in China's first-round loss to Korea, but sat out the next two games.
Iranian big man Hamed Haddadi, the tournament's leading scorer, will power his team in a game against India. Iran is one of three remaining unbeaten teams in the tournament, along with Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei.
