Nets to retire Jason Kidd's jersey

USA TODAY Sports

Former point guard and current Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd will have his jersey retired on Oct. 17.

The Brooklyn Nets announced they will retire Jason Kidd's No. 5 jersey at an Oct. 17 ceremony before a preseason game against the Miami Heat. The induction ceremony will be held before tipoff and will be nationally televised on TNT.

Kidd is entering his first year as Brooklyn's head coach but spent his most successful years as a player with the Nets when they were based in New Jersey. The perennial All-Star played for New Jersey from 2001-08 and led the team to the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003, both of which earned Kidd MVP consideration. Kidd owns the Nets' franchise marks in assists, steals and three-pointers made.

Kidd averaged 14.6 points, 9.1 assists and 7.2 rebounds with the Nets.

Kidd is the franchise's seventh player whose jersey will be retired. He joins Drazen Petrovic, Wendell Ladner, John Williamson, Bill Melchionni, Julius Erving and Buck Williams.
