Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard will make his return to USA Basketball this summer hoping to earn his way onto the squad that will fight for the 2014 World Cup title in Spain, sources told Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. Howard hasn't taken part in any national team activities since he helped the Americans win gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Howard is finally healthy after recovering from a back injury during the summer of 2012 -- that injury kept him out of the London Olympics. After putting up impressive numbers with the Los Angeles Lakers last year, Howard has only bolstered his dominance by averaging 18 points, 12.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game in his first year with the Rockets.
The Thunder's Kevin Durant and Timberwolves' Kevin Love committed to play for the World Cup squad this summer, and Wojnarowski reports they and Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge will likely make up the core frontcourt members.
USA Basketball will release the full list of players committed to fight for the final 12 roster spots for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympic teams on Thursday, according to Yahoo! Sports' Marc J. Spears.
