Dwyane Wade injury: Heat star will play vs. Spurs

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

Dwyane Wade is back for the Heat, but he won't be in the starting lineup.

Dwyane Wade will play for the Miami Heat when they host the San Antonio Spurs Sunday, the Heat's star shooting guard told reporters prior to the game. Wade has been out since Jan. 17, missing four games as he deals with minor knee injuries. Wade will not start, however, and the team has listed Ray Allen in the starting five.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra has paced Wade through the season, resting him early and often. Wade's already sat out 13 games this season, often cited as a day of "rest" as the Heat work toward their fourth-straight trip to the NBA Finals.

Wade's knees have been an issue for him for years. He underwent shock therapy over the summer to alleviate knee pain, but it remains a chronic problem. He's still the Heat's second-leading scorer despite the knee problems, averaging 18.9 points per game while shooting a career-high 54 percent from the field.
